I just KNEW it!!!! We had warmed up and most of the snow was gone, green grass is starting to come up, we got the cow pen all cleaned out and ready for Bandit to calve, as well as the calf stall, and IT'S SNOWING. It's been snowing steady since early this morning, and the weather report says "snow likely" through Sunday and not even getting above freezing during the days, so no chance of melting soon.
I really feel uncomfortable about this, but I guess if push comes to shove (har har, funny calving joke), as long as I'm there WITH her, I can put Bandit in the stall to calve. I much prefer her to calve outside but I don't know if the snow will make it too cold for the baby.
Update on the baby: I think now it's going to be a heifer. I hope I'm wrong, but Bandit's poll hair is looking pretty wild this last week or so. Remember I said there was a patch in the back that was sticking up? Now most of it is. And I think she's going to go before her due date. She doesn't lose her ligaments like a Jersey, but her baby bump is a LOT less now and her teats are full. When they go shiny, she's got 24 hours or less, if she does it like the last two times.
So this baby will be 1/2 Angus, 1/4 Hereford and 1/4 Jersey (basically the same as Seven). Do you guys think it (she) will be tough enough to be born in a few inches of snow? I could then move her into the barn after she's up and has nursed. Bandit just has this BAD habit of backing up to something right at the last moment and I don't want her squishing her baby against a wall in the barn if I can help it.
What do you guys think?
