-I read the post in happy lines and had to go look. Only Judith has them. She and Roo and Abby are the only ones totally shed out, too. Everyone else still has fuzz.
-So, what am I doing wrong? I think it's partly mineral. They hardly touch it, if ever. I've switched types and brands ten times, no difference. (They've been dewormed) Eve turned a light enough brown, with blonde ears, for awhile that I wondered if she had jersey in her. She's shedding out black again. Idk if it's the grass or the mineral I've got in there. Doesn't look like they touch it. (Everyone is only on pasture now. No feed except the steer (5 lbs every couple days) , weights are all good, though Eve isn't very fat) Val and Sydney are brownish too, but they always were. No proof that they *should* be totally black.(commercial cattle, mostly Angus)
-but why would a herd all on the same grass, same mineral, same water, same everything, be in different conditions?
-Charlotte has scabs all over her inner thighs and udder from flies. AUGH! I haven't found anything that really works, that doesn't need a hazmat suit to apply, and doesn't need applied daily, especially since they stand in the pond. I don't want them washing it off and contaminating my pond. No, there's no other water source.
-The steer is still small for my liking. 600 lbs I'd guess, though I'm horrible at guessing. Roo (14 months) is shorter, but has overtaken him in weight visually. I'm going to switch him from the fortified sweet feed to a more corn based feed. Not knowing his age exactly complicates things. His poo is runny, like grass runs, but he's been on grass for months. I'm annoyed and worried I won't get him to butcher weight by mid December. Advice?
-Would you keep Judith (Holstein/Angus, very beefy with long legs) bred to a beef bull, and just let her be out with the beef cows? I'd planned on her replacing Charlotte (Holstein) as my nurse cow, hoping for less potential issues, but she's very standoffish. Won't let me near her unless I trap her. Once in halter she's ok, stubborn. But I think she'll make nice babies. Unless I sell her to someone with the time to work with her, I don't have it. Dh will insist I replace her with a beef cow. Sigh.
-Abby is incredible. I have no idea exactly her breed, I'd guess Maine Anjou, something really big muscled, Angus in there maybe, in the face, but she's gonna be a Niiiice cow. Even if she's not real friendly. I can mess with her while she's eating. That's enough.
I need to get current pictures for you guys. I'll update with new pics tomorrow so you can see what I'm saying.
