If I had my way the entire yard would be a garden, not a poor imitation of a golf course. Mowing is ridiculous imo. A waste of fuel, time, energy, feed, etc etc etc.
And our yard is so big, it's borderline pretentious. But dh won't give an inch.
Anyway, we still have some work to do on the house, guttering, porches, decks, so rather than have my plants trampled, they've been in pots for 2 years now.
Hibiscus midnight marvel, azalea, hydrangea, peony, crape myrtle... now I'm trying to figure out where I'd put them.
I have some leeway to get some in the ground.
Thing is, we have very aggressive Bermuda grass. So, I've thought of using raised beds, maybe... scrape the topsoil, put down a barrier, put up brick or stone boarders about 2ft high with a deep footing, fill the beds and plant the shrubs...
We have about 18 inches of topsoil, then clay. So I'm imagining digging to the clay, edging the bed under ground, then filing with clean soil. (Dh will be just THRILLED to help with that project lol)
The hydrangea has 2 places it can go. In one, it'll be drenched from the roof every time it rains until the gutters are done, but will have only sun in the evening. (Blistering hot, unforgiving summers) in the other, it'd have nice morning sun, afternoon spotted sun, and full evening sun. The ground in both places is mostly bare already.
I have a 3x6 ish concrete tank, no longer used, a gem found abandoned in the north pasture. This will be moved in front of the garage, surrounded by gravel, West side so sun from noon ish on. Hottest part of the day.
I'm thinking peony and hibiscus there. As well as my lilies.
The azalea... I just don't know... lots of nice places, but it's so weedy and so much grass and I'm depending on hot wire to keep animals from eating it over the fence if it's too close. ..
Any suggestions? Alternatives?
