So the mother of one of my sets of triplets was acting " off" on Monday morning. I let everyone onto the grass and she just trailed behind the herd. I saw her eating but decided I would check her over thoroughly after I did my work at our pig nursery barns. When I was done I went and watched her and she was eating but hadn't really moved from the area I left her in and she was walking slowly, like she hurt and she was staring at me for the longest time.
I went for the Banamine and Baytril and got my daughter so she could hold her still. I looked her over and she looked ok, them I got my hands on her udder Her back right teat was scaly and hard ( best description I can use) Udder was soft ,not hot or cold. The kids nursed on her and what little I expressed from that teat ( it was hard to do) was milk. I treated her with the meds( baytril & Banamine) Mon, Tue, Wed and she seems to feel pretty good now and is eating well.
I was wondering what to do with the kids as far as eating goes but so far they are doing ok. They are hanging around her a bit more than normal but I think they are getting enough. She is one of those " undesirable does" who has 2 normal teats and 2 smaller teats ( split teats in a V) that obviously produce milk. I make it a point to visually look at the udders once a day when the does are nursing. She looked fine from behind then, but today i see a difference.
Sadly I think she will lose that teat and that means I won't take the chance on breeding her again. She gives me nice kids and is a good girl & good mother and that is a shame. I can only guess at what happened, thinking maybe in the fight to nurse she got bitten. So far the udder is firm but not too hot or cold. I can only hope it stays the same.
I also have a 3 legged baby doe. No sign of obvious injury and she doesn't mind me moving and squeezing her hip to toe, but she is holding up her back leg. She gets around just fine so I am keeping a close watch on her too.
I hate when things happen.
