Whew - what a rough year we seem to be having with our goats! Heart, my son's most expensive show doe - the one that we almost lost to pregnancy toxemia earlier this year - went down last night - and looks like it's listeriosis (or possibly polio). She ate her pellets yesterday morning - but with a little less enthusiasm than usual - but then when my son went to feed last night, she was laying in the corner of the shed and wouldn't get up. I treated her last night with Pen G, B Complex (didn't have thiamine) and oral banamine (on vet's advice) - which at least brought her temp down - but this morning I had to take her in to the vet: she's trembling all over, head started tilting and still can't stand. She's there now getting IV thiamine, dexamethasone and may get fluids (she wasn't too dehydrated yet - and still had good rumen sounds this morning thankfully). I can't believe that after all we went through to get her to survive the toxemia now we may lose her anyway... The two other goats and my little dexter heifer are fine. Vet said she could have eaten moldy hay - or moldy something she dug up in the pen...just when her body condition was starting to look pretty good again! It's been a weird week. My husband broke a rib while bottle feeding baby goats(!don't ask!), various colleagues/friends have lost loved ones, we had a setback in a project at work...I dunno. Could all be worse - but thank goodness it's Friday - hoping next week will be better!
