Of course, nothing EVER goes wrong when the vet is available. Yesterday, Zipper (the Dobie) had another one of her "episodes" where she started barfing up everything and acting like her belly hurt. She's had at least two surgeries in her younger days to remove blockages because she will eat absolutely anything. It's a full time job keeping stuff out of her mouth, but I've been fairly successful since I learned how serious a problem it could be. And expensive. The surgery we had to pay for was $1,500.00. Gah. They pulled out a wad of small sticks and dried weeds. The one before that (her previous owner) was to remove a fuzzy toy. Seriously.
Anyway, she does this occasionally, where it's not really a blockage that needs a vet visit, but eating too fast or SOMETHING that gives her a bellyache, and when her tummy hurts, she vomits everything, including water. Usually I give her a bowl of Metamucil in water, or some coconut oil melted with broth, to get things moving, and then wait it out, but last night I did NOT want to spend the night trying to sleep on our old uncomfortable couch, fully clothed (in order to whisk her outside if she became distressed again), and all of a sudden it hit me - BANAMINE to relax the muscles and dull the pain. Duh. I don't know if it's approved for use in dogs, but I figured what the hell, it wouldn't hurt to try it, so I gave her .8 CC in the butt and just like magic, 10 minutes later, she hitched a big sigh and relaxed. She was able to finally sleep, and she stopped fussing, and never threw up after that. She slept the whole night through (and *I* got to sleep in my bed!) and seems perfectly fine this morning. She hasn't been out for a poop yet, but I'm sure that will be coming along shortly.
I just can't believe how many times I struggled through these 24 hour long (or more) "upsets" with her, including constantly cleaning up barfed water all over the wool carpet (because you know there's a law against barfing on the kitchen linoleum), and never thought of this before. Well, now I know, and since I still don't know if it's considered a valid treatment for dogs, I wanted to post this to say it worked anyway. In case anyone else needs to try it. I've given it to horses for colic, so why not a dog with colic, eh?
