I have been buying square bales for $7each. They weigh between 45-55lbs. I only have an old S10 and can only carry 10 bales at a time.
They have a barn full of round bales - baled at the same time, by the same guys, off the same fields. They are huge, dense bales - but with only my ancient little truck, I had no way to carry one home
Yesterday it dawned on me that I hadn't ever ASKED if he would deliver. So I called. Yes, for $50 they will deliver one - or more!
SO... here's the question. Would you get them???
He tells me that they weigh about 1000lbs and they charge $60/ea
I have been paying $70 for about 450-500lbs of the same hay (orchard grass)
Eva has been scarfing up every last scrap of it each day.
I can have him deliver 2 round bales for a total of $170 - which would be a real pinch in the budget right now... but it hardly seems worth it to pay $50 for delivery of a single $60 bale
I would have to have him put both of them in the pasture since I have no way to move that much hay once he's gone.
I've been wracking my brain on how I could contain 2 round bales and all I've come up with is that I might could have him dump them nearly on top of each other and then take my round bale ring apart and 'stretch' it with chain between the sections???
This would be a DEAL - but only if I can keep Eva and Carter from wasting half of it - since right now I'm getting almost zero waste
I will be out of small bales Sunday and will have to go get another load... OR I can have him deliver Sunday afternoon...
What would you do?
