Here she is, my new cow!
You can see that she's a bit taller than Buttercup. They are getting along great! I suspect that Buttercup is in heat and NOT bred because she stood at the fence bellering all day yeaterday, and as soon as she met Pezra, she began mounting/standing to be mounted. So...I have to decide what to do with a 15 year old unbreedable Jersey....
But back to Pezra:
She's 6 years old. She's bread to an Angus by AI, but I'll have the vet out to preg check her, due in August. She's not shown signs of heat since AI, but I want to make sure. She's a year and a half into this lactation, being milked twice a day. I went down to milk this morning and she had a very empty bag, I got a few little squirts, which she stood beautifully for, but I believe I will go ahead and dry her off. She was being milked by the family's daughters, 8 and 16. This made me feel good. I can handle this! It was a bit of a rodeo this morning getting her in the stantion, but mostly because the pigs were in the way. I think it will got better in the future.
She seems very smart, but a little stand-offish and timid. I think that is normal.
I have to admit that I'm a bit intimidated by her size, as I'm used to my smaller Jersey. I went to bed last night with a stomach ache and head ache thinking, "what have I gotten myself into?" I didn't sleep well, because a giant cow that loomed in my dreams bigger than a horse, climbed over the fence to trample me in my dreams, really, I dreamed this. But, after an initial drag through the mud (my dad hanging on to her, not me) she behaved well and figured out that I was trying to give her treats, she has been great.
I love her ears and her coloring. I'm looking forward to getting to know her more!
