Recently I added a rooster to my small flock of hens. He is half ameraucana half Bev Davis maran. One hen is pure wheaten ameraucana, one is pure Rhode Island red, one is half white jersey giant half ameraucana, the last is an easter egger, but has muff and green legs. The reason I"m confused is I had been getting brown and pinkish eggs for some time. The pure wheaten ameraucana has not started laying, the others have been laying for months before I got the rooster. Two days after getting the basically olive egger maran I got a stand out dark chocolate egg. This rooster crows, has a small comb, but upright posture and rooster build. I don't know who out of my four hens could possibly lay a dark brown egg and why the color switch. I have been waiting for a blue egg from the wheaten hen but so far nothing from her. Now I'm getting a dark brown egg daily, as dark as a pure bred good quality maran. I have not seen the rooster in question mount a hen, but he is a crower. Its probably just a coincidence that the dark eggs started appearing the same time I got the rooster. They are small like a new layer, but the only new layer should be my pure wheaten ameraucana. There is nothing visually about her that would indicate an outcross of some sort. Do light tinted egg layers start laying dark brown eggs for any reason? Their diet has been pretty much the same, layer mix, mealworms, table scraps and whatever they scratch up on their own, including a baby copperhead. Or do some hens look and act like a rooster???
