One more question about sharemilking...We tried to sharemilk and Molly wouldn't let her milk down so we took the calf away. We had been getting 1.5 gals in the am (with very little cream)and then leaving the calf with her for the day and penning him at night. When we took him away completely we got another 1.5 gals in the pm but got lots of cream at each milking. Batman (calf) was getting the extra 1.5 gals a day.
2 days ago my 8yo daughter injured her ankle riding an excercise bike at her grandmas and couldn't walk. My husband had to carry her to the bathroom etc. We've been extremely stressed with other things as well...new baby in the house, etc. and I couldn't take any more so I told my husband to let the calf back out with Molly at evening milking time. We then separated them at night to milk again in the morning - back to the original schedule. It seemed to me that milking to get 1.5 gals to feed to a calf was stupid just to get a bit of cream. At least at this point. But this morning we only got 1 gallon instead of 1.5.
I would like to keep them apart and milk OAD until my husband is on summer break (he's a teacher) which starts June 1st. Is there any reason this would be a bad idea? Hubby thinks we should go back to TAD, but I think that at least until we get the 2nd field fenced (so the goats and dogs can be fed by the kids without being trampled by all the animals fighting for food) and roosters separated from the chickens (so the children can go in and feed without being attacked!) it will just be too much stress. The fence is almost done. Maybe another week to have everyone in their places. Any thoughts?
