Hailey as a spot about the size of a quarter on her front teat that looks like it has been skinned....missing significant dermal layer. Looks awful. I milked her out by hand this am and tried to do that quarter and hoped the calf would be able to finish her off for me. Better the calf getting kicked than me. Well, I was silly to think that would work. She had a much worse wound in that teat months ago and she let the calf nurse and me milk her just fine. Not sure since Comet is larger now, that causes sucking to be intolerable. anyway...I weaned Comet from her and washed her udder with warm water and tried to milk out this quarter just now. Used Lydacaine topically on the spot to see if that would help numb it so I could get this done. Can't say it really worked.
I did the best I could in getting the udder milked out. Don't feel confident I got it all. I then put antiseptic ointment and tried to put a bandage on the teat...loosely to keep it moist. other than that...I do not know what to do.
Was going to Not milk till tomorrow (Monday) AM. I was calf sharing with Comet getting locked up every early evening. Milking in the AM and then letting Comet out with Hailey all day. I am 98% sure that the milking machine will be functional tomorrow AM and am not sure if using the milking machine will be "less irritating" to Hailey's teat than hand milking?
I don't want mastitis...obviously. Hailey is not a big producer. I was getting about a gallon a day with the 4 month old Comet on her.
does any of this make sense? any suggestions on how I should deal with the next few days and this awful skinned spot?
