maggie is the cow we got in loisiana as a yearling heiffer.. had her baby 9/11 this y ear.. has never been a fat cow.. was bred by the then dairy inspector or ex dairy inspector down in loisiana.. im suspecting shes a grain needy cow.. lol.. ugh.. well we got the runs taken care of.. to do it we had to back off her grain a bit.. give her beet pulp.. and probios. first day we wormed her then 5 days consecutive ending on halooween or there abouts.. corrid as it was possible she had cocidiosis.. she firmed up.. good poo too.. now here is how i feed her.. she has a free feed round bale in a feeder that keeps it off the ground.. she gets in the morning and am.. a huge scoop of grain and scoop of beetpulp.. (she got more before but slowly working her up again) she has fresh water lots of it.. never empty always clean.. she has room to moooove around.. now a couple days ago i was worried that she was getting mastitis as her bag was empty the 5 times we went to milk.. literally half a cup if that.. her calf is still on her.. so one day i put her in the pasture alone and kept the calf in.. 10 hours later.. her udder was huge.. so shes giving about 3-4 gallons a day first freshener heiffer.. what else can i gvie to her to beef her u p i think she is milking off her back.. in her poo i se alot of chopped corn and grains left over.. its a big waste.. woudl it be feasable to switch her slowly to a ground grain mix? something that she can digest better? im thinking of starting her on fresh.. ground that mornign each morning and evening flax seed for extra fat.. might make the milk fishy.. but heck she needs to gain.. i also have a h orse blanket that fits her.. problem.. she walks out of it.. is there a site that tells you how to jurry rig.. or redo a blanket so that it will stay on a cow? i want to keep h er warm in the winter.. the warmer i keep her the less energy goes to trying to stay warm.. heard soemone on here mention yeaste.. what type from the feed store? will baking yeast work? we have quite a bit that is outt dated.. still good but not tthe best for baking..
