Hoping for some help/reassurance. I'm so paranoid about worms to begin with. We purchased our first pigs ever: two 7 week old feeder pigs in August. As soon as they were home we gave them a ivermectin injection, and put them out in the area we fenced for them. Two months later we saw round worms in their poop. I had thought that you usually only see adults if they have a very heavy infestation, or right after deworming (which we hadn't done since bringing them home). However, my husband had been feeding them lots of acorns which I thought I remembered reading can be antiparasitic and wondered if this was why they were coming out in the poo. I used pour on ivermectin with a dose I found online because they are now waaay to big and pushy for me to catch and give an injection to. We saw more round worms in the poop after that, and I tried to keep it picked up for a few days. I just dewormed them again yesterday (14 days later), and we are seeing adult roundworms again in the poo. I had thought that if the first deworming worked, then it would have killed all of the adults and we wouldn't be seeing them after the second deworming?? Right? Now I'm worried that I need to switch to something else?
Also, I'm terribly concerned about their pen. They are in about a 1/4 acre lot with a small "pond" which they poop in, so I can't possibly get all the poop out. Will they just continue to get reinfected? We plan on butchering sometime around February.
Also also, we were wanting to keep pigs in this area regularly in an effort to "seal" the pond. How long should we, or should we at all wait, before introducing new babies into this area after these pigs are gone? Will the water in the pond ever be free of round worms?
Sorry this is so long, and thank you for reading. I'm seriously stressed about his. Intestinal parasites are kind of a phobia of mine!
