We went to see some cows today. The man had 7 to choose from. Out of those, 3 I would consider but 1 I really like. He had 1 holstein, 1 pure Jersey, 1 Jersey Cross, 1 Guernsey Cross, and the other were Longhorn/Holstein??? Of course the pure Jersey was my favorite. She is smaller like my other Jerseys and would fit in well with the plans we have for our farm.
He uses them as nurse cows for his beef calves he buys at the sale barn, although some of them he does milk on occasion by hand. My only concern is that some of the calves had warts. Out of the 25 calves or so he had there, I noticed them on about 5 or 6 of them. I asked him about them and he said that they get them even when he vaccinates so now he just cuts them off and feeds them to them. Sounded weird to me but that is what the vet suggested he do and he said it seems to work.
My question is, should I worry about bringing this cow home to our farm considering the warts on the calves. None of the cows had warts and all were in really good condition physically, despite that some of them were nursing 3 or 4 calves. Some of these calves were 500# or more and it really surprised me when he was turning the big ones in with the cows too. They are all bred back also and due around the first of September.
I took some pictures while I was there but, of course, my camera decided to malfunction and some of them are all black, all you can see is pairs of shining eyes. He said he would email me some photos, we had forgot the camera back in our van at first but DH went back to get it, so I will call him today and ask him for some.
Thanks,
Rachel
