Hi all,
Today is our 1 year anniversary with our first cow Spring.
Some of you may remember my plea for support and ideas as her and I ( and hubby too!) struggled to understand one another. I had to learn everything about cows, I'm /was a horse person, I learned how to hand milk in some of the worst weather, she learned to put up with me ;D
I grew to love her.
We've had all the "first experiences" of a year with a cow, oad milking, drying off, calving, and finding a home for the calf. This Friday we will see how well we did with watching for heats and having her rebred AI. We really think she is pregnant again!
To all the newbies out there I want to say hang in there! Now I can be one to say " It will get better, otherwise the rest of us wouldn't be doing it!"
I now can milk relaxed and sitting, DH can do chores while I milk and we can visit some. I rarely use the milk tote and mostly milk fully into my milk pail as Spring is such a good girl and stands pretty quietly, eating the BEST hay of course! ;D
I used to feel stressed by all the milk and selling it and I've reorganized and now it all goes smoothly with no waste and extra $ !
I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have offered support and insight this past year you have been EXTREMELY helpful and supportive.
I now look back and smile when I think a year ago I wondered about my ability to continue, doubts about my decision to get a cow in the first place. I know now that I love what I do and Spring will be with us until it is her time naturally to go, she will grow old here with us, maybe our only cow ever but boy what a cow!
Happy milking!
Kelly
