Vanilla (formerly of Maggiesherd) aborted her bull calf yesterday morning, we think she was due in March. Thank God my husband was home after being gone for a week. We knew something was wrong when she didn't come in for breakfast. She was very protective and we couldn't get her away from her baby. It was so sad. After church her owners came over and helped, we finally coaxed her away with some sweet feed. She is still "bawling" (does that mean mooing very loudly?) today. We milked her yesterday and this morning she gave about 3 quarts. Her udder still seemed very full to me and I know I've read on here about cows "holding up", so I'm hoping with time she will let down more milk. We did give her some molasses water yesterday. She's never been a big producer, 2 1/2 to 3 gallons a day maybe. Is there anything else we should be doing for her? I've still been trying to figure out her diet, etc. Her owners were giving her 12 cups of grain twice a day. If I'm giving her a flake of alfalfa hay, a couple cups of beet pulp, and a couple cups of black oil sunflower seeds a day, should I still give her the 12 cups of grain or should I decrease that? W
And of course we have Caramel who seems to be wasting away. We have treated her for worms again. We also got the beet pulp..HOW MUCH SHOULD SHE GET? and some calf manna. I spoke to the vet and he said treat her for worms again and that it wouldn't be worth it to test her for Johne's. I'm not sure what that meant. He also said he MAY stop by sometime if he's in the area???
And then there's the bull, King. He is fat and happy, but we still stay away from him as much as possible. He's only broken one gate so far.
