Well, I guess I'm selfish, because we went on a nice loooong vacation to Utah. Went out to Park City to ski LOL LOL Had to come home to KS to find some snow! ;D Well anyway we had fun and the kids got to see their cousins and goof off, etc. Not to mention I got some major relaxing time with my sister and her family.
So anyway my point was: I came home to one sick calf, with a cough that's bordering on a bark. He also has a fairly decent amount of snot out of both nostrils. He looks kind of rough with his ears down. He is still nursing and tore into the alfalfa I put out. He is also the one that had pinkeye previously. A couple of the others that just seem to have a cough. (These are all foster calves on nurse cows.)
We apparently had 80 degrees on Monday and then Wed. plummeted to cold, crappy snowy weather.
So I called the vet (on the advice of my BIL who thought they might be developing pneumonia) and he recommended 15 cc of penicillin for 3 days. So I gave the one a shot today. He didn't get quite all of it as he stood up under me before I could finish the job. This calf is 7+ weeks old. The other two that are ?able are 6+ weeks old.
Does anyone have any other thoughts? Should I give the other two that are just coughing some pen. too? Any other over the counter things I can do?
It occurred to me on the plane home Sat night as I was watching the moon come up over the Rockies, that maybe I wasn't a serious enough family cow owner because I still like vacations. ;D
