How can I tell if Buttercup is pregnant? Here's the history:
She had her first heat on July 13th, when she was about 10 1/2 months old. She was very consistent with coming into heat every 19 days, so the day before her 4th heat, when she was just over a year old, I locked her up in her corner of the pasture, to keep her from pestering our gelding, as he bites her in response to her trying to mount him.
She did not show any signs of being in heat on Day 19, but on Day 20, I thought she did, so we called the AI guy who took care of her by noon that day. Three hours later, when we brought the horses back up, she was fixated on our gelding and trying to mount him, which told me she was probably still in heat and took it for a good sign.
Eighteen days after the AI guy was here she came back into heat again. Bellering all day long. I was away at a conference and my hubby won't make the call for AI, as he doesn't want to deal with "all of this stuff"...So on October 7th we took Buttercup to our neighbor's for a "honeymoon" with his Jersey bull.
Today is day 19. When at home, she would be agitated, following our gelding, and would have a discharge. I just got back from feeding her and she is showing no signs of heat. Not particularly interested in the bull, he's not interested in her, her vulva looks dry...
Is there a possibility that the AI actually worked? I remember (I think) reading here that sometimes they will show signs of heat even after being bred. She will stay with the bull until at least Saturday or Sunday anyway, but how do I know whether she's "taken". In the horse world we call it settled. What's the terminology for cattle?
I've read a bit about bumping, but I'm sure it's way too early for that, plus I've never done it before.
Thanks in advance for any advice/comfort you all may offer!
