well. yesterday morning was all right, but at the end of milking she fell twice while in the stanchion and it must have hurt her a lot. we have this milking pad/ stall floor so i dont have to be in the mud and the way Niña skitters when she is upset makes her fall on it. so last night she wouldnt even go in. for hours. and i gave up sometime after dark.
worried sick about mastitis, of course.
this morning i did get her in, only took about 20 or 30 minutes. i had removed that mat so she couldnt fall.
milking was fine- her milk seems sweet and not hardness or hotness in her udder. but she is still not letting down for me. i got about a gallon and a quarts, every drop i could, wishing she would just let down!!! and then i put a halter on her while in the stanchion. she freaked a lot, but then i gave her another can of grain and brushed her down really well. she couldnt hide the fact that she liked that./ and i let her loose. she is out there running around in circles trying to shake that halter off.
i hope, soon, to tie her for short periods to teach her about the halter. then, if i am brave, try to train her to lead. breeder cubes are next in line to be purchased. Nimue's illness, all the medicine, etc have us scrambling to pay bills.
how worried should i be about mastitis? her calf was removed not yesterday but the morning before. when will she let down for me? would milking a 3rd time each day benefit us or make us all more harried?
one very pleasant part of all of this, to end on a sweet note, is that Nimue loves her. they are in love. they sit, face to face, and chew their cud all day. when Nimue is away so that i can milk Niña is most upset. it is probably the best thing for Nimue's recovery- a pal.
