i am actually delaying going out to meet Niña this morning.
yesterday evening we took Boca from Nimue and put dry-cow infusions in. i did this on the advice of my (good) vet. i also but some salve on her cut-up teats (darn that calf!!) while messing with her i noticed her hooves were terribly dirty and decided to scrape the dried mud off of them.
well, you know that limping/ coronary band pain is characteristic of bluetongue. and since we stopped giving the pain meds last week she has walked tenderly. anyway, i am not sure if what i discovered is hoof rot or if it is just a presentation of the illness she is recovering from, so i ask you all.
her back hooves seemed hale, just dirty. her front hooves- both of them- were also filthy, but as i scraped along the front of her toes to the side, the hoof material sort of 'burred' up on both hoofs near the edge. it wasnt as solid. also, she seems to have tenderness under her hoof, like in the back. moreover, there was a sweet smell to this business that i didnt notice in the rear hooves.
she just finished a round of antibiotics, which i am reading is the 'cure' here. but my friend does daily foot washing and Dr. Naylor's hoof & heel on her animal with genuine hoof rot. i am thinking of doing this after i call dr linn today to ask about the bluetongue connection.
anyway, what is your word? does this sound like hoof rot? can i expect to control it with daily washing, scrubbing and hoof & heel? she isnt genuinely lame, just tenderfooted.
also one more question- why me? doesnt it seem like i have had a little too much bad recently? ok, done wallowing in self pity.
