We live in the heart of the Ozark Mountains in Northern Arkansas. In 2007 we started looking for that perfect place in the country so that I could get back to my roots. We found the place of my dreams in late 2007. It had just over forty Acers and was full of junk in the yard. My husband, daughter, and realtor thought I was delusional! I made them step forward a few feet and then said look. Stretched out in front of us was part of the 20 or so Acers of pasture. It had a gently slope up hill. What a view!
Well we looked past all the work it needed and decided this would be our final resting place so to speak. We have since added cows, couple of goats, sheep, chickens, guineas, geese, and way too many dogs!
My DH and I are retired and work harder now than ever. I am from farmers on both sides of the family. My dad moved us off the farm when we were little. I never did fit in to city life. My DH was born city but I did not hold that against him! He has come a long way and has found his inner country, which he is very proud of. He even pulled his first calf last year! Under direct supervision and my watchful eye. He saved calf & momma! Our DD is the last of 8 btwn us. She is now 13. She is a good helper around the place. She is not as cow crazy as her mother! I have to change that.
I just got the internet couple of months ago. Found this site not too long ago. I just love reading all the stories and the closeness you all seem to have. My grandpa had 200 Acers and raised beefs. He passed away in 1998. He taught me a lot. I have friends who know a lot around here and can call on them for answers. This site is just like having global neighbors living close by. Available to answer questions and just be there for you for moral support.
It would be an honor to be considered a global neighbor.
Our cows consist of a Jersey Hazel 2 and a half years old, her bull calf Tater 7 mo. old. Abby our newest addition, she is a 15 month old Holstein heifer. Kessie our 5 year old Dexter/Angus cow, Her daughter out of a Jersey bull Marie. Marie is 18 months old. I started out with Dexter's, but fell in love with the milk cows. When I was a small child I asked my grandpa if he ever milked his cows. He pointed to them and said " the calves do it for me". Should have known then I would end up with Dairy cows!
Well I ramble just a bit some times. Hope to be speaking to you soon.
