A while back there was an ad in the paper for some brome squares. My sister was interested and called the guy and got details. She was going to buy some for her goats, but since changed her mind (mostly because she's 4 1/2 hrs. from here, transportation issues.)
The thing is, he said it got about 4/10th or 4/100th ? of an inch on it after it was baled. He brought a bale for me to check out (for sis), and me, knowing little about hay, wasn't sure what to think. He said his horse customers didn't want it, but it would be fine for beef cattle. I mentioned dairy, he said "I wouldn't feed it to dairy cows." I opened the bale and it has a slight "cloud" of what I assume you call gray dust that wafts out of it. I threw some out on the ground in the corral and all the animals sampled it. It was cleaned up eventually. (At the time they still had nice green grass.)
Now, would he say not to feed it to dairy because of the typical confinement way of feeding or for some other reason?
If I had it I would throw the occasional bale down into the round bale feeder or something similar.
The reason I'm considering buying some is he wants 2.50 a square for it and if I bought 100 bales he's knock it down to 2.25 each.
It's honestly more trouble for me, as I don't have a hay elevator to get it up in the barn, would have to see about borrowing one. And it's more trouble to feed than the round bales I usually use. I was just thinking with the hay prices, maybe I should have some as insurance.
What do you guys think?
