My neighbors 14 yo had E coli this week. It started a a killer stomach flu--then bloody runs...then vomiting and extreme pain. He was admitted to the childrens hospital and is home now--watching for signs of kidney failure in the next few weeks.
In the local paper--there was a n article about 5 known cases of ecoli in children in our county this summer. Front page news--but they just said that floks should wash their hands more--and blamed it on the fairs.
I'm a bit perplexed. This boy didn't go to the fair. These folks have 1 cow. They don't habitually pet her--never milk her etc. The cow is in poor health (IMHO). They don't grain her....NEVER feed her hay, and she has about 6-8 acres of pasture that is all weeds. They get so high in summer--you can't see the cow! (the reason I mention this is to explain that she is not a "high grain" cow)
This boy hadn't petted the cow recently. The rest of the family seems uneffected.
The doctor said that one family member could have had a bit of fecal matter that wasn't visable to the eye...touched a table or something--then he touched it and chewed a finger nail etc etc.
I'm no expert(which is why I'm posting)--but this example of contact seems very casual to me. There are two other children in the house( 6 and 9). Seems to me that they would have gotten it--they pet the cows and the younger one always has his fingers in his mouth...
My husband has worked in the food industry and sayd that this many people getting this illness in such a short time would be concidered an "outbreak" in the prepared food world.
Am I being too silly about this? I just think it is coming from somewhere else--but I have no clue where it could be coming from?? The paper didn't mention any involvement of any agencies etc that were trying to find out any common denominators in thew victims.....maybe its' just the nervous momma...
Also--can they have their cow tested for it? Our cow?
Any thoughts?
