Here is the mastitis tx I wrote about in "so upset." It's long so stay with me.
Billy left 3 messages on my machine and I transcribed them. Here it is:
He said for acute mastitis (check temp, notice if off feed, looks sick?, quarter swollen and hard, lumpy or dark milk), the most important thing is to strip many times a day. It is the most essential thing. He told me the story from a James Herriott book about the farmer whose cow had mastitis and he went to see him. The next day when he returned, the farmer was in the same position, stripping the cow. He said to the farmer's wife that the man looked to be in the same position as he was the day before. She said he was - he's stayed there all night stripping the cow. It worked!
Next he said to put garlic tinture (3cc 2X day) in the vulva along with an antioxidant blend (2cc 2X day). It can be given orally but the vulva is more "user friendly". He said to lift the tail, spread the lips of the vulva apart and use a syringe. He has a special one with a plastic tube on the end. The mucous membranes absorb this very quickly and you will smell garlic on her breath.
Then use a whey derived from colostrum (he gets it from Crystal Creek) and give subcutaneously by the tail head. Give 30cc 1X day, then again in 10 days and again in 30 days. He said when giving the whey shot, to massage the area to disperse the solution or there will be a lump. It can be given other places but he finds the tail head best (to the right or left of the tail there in an indentation).
Also use an aloe vera drench or aloe vera juice (300cc every 12 hours) and an echinacea tincture (2cc 2X day) in the vulva.
Homeopathic remedies that can be used are Phytolacca and Bryonia.
Put linament on the udder quarter to bring the blood to the area.
You can infuse the quarter overnight with oil, 30cc aloe and 2 cc garlic tincture using a special tool - don't know what that is!
If she's really sick, give B vitamins, glucose and calcium.
Do everything you can to support the immune system.
This is all for acute cases and for the most severe. I would say it can certainly be modified.
I have given Jewelia raspberry herbal infusions to drink and added garlic tincture and echinacea tincture. I'm also stripping very often (he said every 2 hours in the day would be good) and I'm using the aloe/tea tree rub on the udder which was mentioned by someone else.
He said for prevention that pre and post dipping are essential. He recommends an iodine dip and it must be used for 30 seconds on each teat to be effective. He said it takes 30 minutes for the teat to close after stripping.
That's it! I hope it helps.
