When I got home from work last night my gelding was on the cow side of the fence, which I thought was strange, but I had to feed my baby calves and he was just standing calmly, so didn't go to move him right away. When I opened the gate for him to come on the right side, he did not respond to me, so I walked around in front of him and went to touch him. He flung his Head up and almost fell backwards out of the gate. He was very unsteady, staggering like he has no control over his legs, and he had severe muscle tremors. When he tried to walk he had his head very low to the ground and twisted toward his left leg. His lower lip is hanging to the left and his upper lip keeps moving up and down and kind of back and forth. He is holding his eyes half closed and only opens them if I get to close. He also is randomly pawing the ground or kicking out with one hind leg. He will not go near his grain or the water bucket.
After checking out the fence, I could see where he must have fallen into the stock tank and through the cattle panels, taking out the electric wire. He does have some small cuts that I'm not to worried about. I did get him into a large round pen away from all the other animals. This morning he is standing calmly until I go close to the pen, then he get agitated and pins his ears, paws the ground and again kicks out with one back leg. He moves like the back and front ends are not working together.
I have called both large animal clinic that service this area but they are not open till monday. I do work at a small animal vet clinic, but my Dr is out of town. I called our small animal sister clinic, but there is no one there that knows anything about horses.
He is up on all shots except rabies. I used to give my horses rabies shots when I lived in MN, but out here they just laugh at me. I have not heard that my county is in a rabies quarantine, but my neighboring county is. That is my big concern, does this sound like rabies in a horse??? He is an old boy, 26, and I can put him down if I have to. I have never done it but now how. If it is rabies, am I allowed to, or does a vet have to? I don't want to leave him like this till Monday.
