The last week has been a nightmare. Everything was going good, house babies were settled into the barn and all was well. Then we got a terrible storm, horrible wind, freezing rain and really low temps. I had the barn locked up tight and all piggies had their heat lamps and fresh dry bedding. Well, my husband forget to feed the horses so went out to the barn to get them a bale of hay and forget to latch the big double barn door. You can only imagine my horror the next morning when I went out to check everyone. Barn door wide open and my babies all freezing cold and lethargic. I have gone between feeling so physically ill that it was all I could do to keep from upchucking, to crying myself into a stupor.
24 almost frozen babies. I lost the littlest one within 24 hours. Just couldn't keep him warm. I finally got the rest of them warmed up but it took its toll on the little buggers. They didn't want to eat and then the diarrhea started. I am finally getting a handle on it all, but still have a couple that are touch and go. My sun room has been turned into a baby pig nursery/hospital with the smaller more fragile ones in a separate pen and the larger healthier ones in their own pen. They are finally starting to eat solid food again and their poop is starting to get mushy.
Round the clock care and cleaning is about to take its toll on me. I am seeing a light at the end of the tunnel though. We have had really warm day time weather so I have had them outside a little each day the last couple of days. It seems to be good for them, some rooting and some playing. I actually had a couple of them scruffing with each other. It was music to my ears! If they continue to improve as they are, I may even get a full nights sleep pretty soon.
