So, my sweet cow decided to kick the crap out out of me today. :-(
Looks like she was only good yesterday because she hadn't been milked in 2 days and was really uncomfortable.
She kicked me multiple times, sliced my shirt open, and gashed my chest. Scared the Holy crap out of me as I am use to horses who give warnings.
I called the seller and she won't give me a refund. She said she is good to machine milk and was fine to hand milk. However, apparently..her hand milk threshold is low. She started kicking me after only 15 minutes. I was doing much better today too and got a 1/4 of a 9 gallon bucket. She said she just had her grandson test her with hand milk but he didn't milk her all out. So, how she could say she is good to hand milk I do not know. Our check has already been cashed. I told her before we got the cow we are new to cows and needed a patient, experienced, honest cow that would be safe and a good first cow. I don't think that's what we were sold.
I called the Jersey farmer who had helped me yesterday and he came back out. She did the same with him. I wanted to make sure it wasn't me. He is old school and a 3rd or 4th generation dairy farmer and he can tell if the cow is scared, sore, or just being mean. She was being mean. He said he thinks he might be able to take her and he will try to fix her. If he can't, he said cows like that have to go to "market". He said that I probably am not safe with her and she needed more restraint. If he can fix her, we are going to sell her because I am too scared now. She even kicked while being wiped down before milking and cleaned up afterwards.
If he can get her safe for machine milking than I will try to sell her and I will be HONEST and tell people my experience with her.
I had been wondering if cows are like horses. The first day or two we get a new horse they are well behaved. However, after another day or two they show their true colors.
I am so disappointed and horrified. I have a young son that I was hoping would learn how to be a cow person via 4-H when he gets older.
So, I am now out $2500 for the cow; $475 for shipping; and I lost track how much for milking supplies.
It looks like I was "taken to school". :-( :-(
I am too afraid now to try again with this cow because I have lost all trust for her. Especially, since she was nasty to the farmer and he is experienced.
So...that's my family cow experience in a nutshell.........
