Ok. I need everyone's help please!!! I bought my cow (a 3/4 mini-Jersey and 1/4 Dexter) and she will be here this weekend.
I ordered some milking supplies from a goat place.
The trip to get her here is 2 days. The seller said I should milk her the day I get her to let out the pressure. So.......how smoothly can I expect this to go? New person, new place, and she is the only cow on the property. She's shares a fence line with horses.
She is being milked 1 time a day and her calf got sold. She started to dry up and then the seller got her from a guy and put her own calf on to bring her milk back.
She also needs a good bath. Do cows like baths? Can I use horse shampoo?
Can I feed her my horse grain and hay? How much should I feed her? The seller said 3 scoops but everybody's scoops are different. I know I feed grain at milk time.... I just didn't know if my horse feed would work ok.
Can I feed the supplement Biotin to her like my horses? It's good for coats.
Can I fly spray her with my all natural horse fly spay?
I am afraid to turn her out in a big grass paddock because what if i can't catch her. If I tether her how do I go about doing that and where do I get the tether or do you think I could catch her with grain?
I am going to milk her and put 1/2 the milk in mason jars and put them in a crock of ice water. How long do you leave it in for? My husband made me buy a pastuerizer for his 1/2 of the milk. Does pasteurized milk taste the same as raw milk? I figure it kills everything and it will taste just like store milk but I can't proove it yet.
For butter, if she is giving 1 gallon a day do I take the cream off the top in a couple of days and put it aside? How many days do I do that with that amount of milk and have enough for butter? Will it go bad in the meantime?
If I take the cream off will I be making skim milk or will it still taste good?
Has anyone made cow milk soap? How do I go about doing that?
Lastly, I have chickens. Do I give the chickens the milk as is or let it curdle?
Sorry for all the questions!
I'm SO excited!!!!!
Thanks in advance!!!! :-) :-) :-)
