Thank you so much everyone for all the help when my week old Jersey heifer was scouring last week! It was great to be able to call someone Roseanne, thanks for that. Joann, I had wondered why a nursing calf can drink so much and a bottle calf can't, and now I understand. Thank you. Pat, I didn't get to try the remedies as she worsened but I'll keep them on tap for next time. Thank you.
I wanted to update you all sooner but as I was treating her for simple scours she came down with bloody scours. I called the vet who gave me instructions on using the antibiotic scour boluses I had on hand and the rehydration packs. That seems to have worked and she is now back to health. I am planning to give her some probiotics now to help get her back on track. Does anyone know any reason not to give her the kind I take? I know that the probiotics that Fertrell sells are the same for chickens, pigs and cows so I figure that they must be the same as people's. Anyone know differently? Anything else I should give her to make up for the antibiotics?
Here is a long overdue update and introduction: After losing our dear Yoda Mae we purchased a mixed cow of hereford appearance with her bull calf. I still need to get some pictures of them. He has been banded thanks to the advice from some of you cowxperts :0) on the list and we are seperating them during the day. I milk two teats while he milks two since Millie won't let down otherwise. We still get one gallon a day doing this. The milk tastes bad currently which I believe is due to a wild mint type plant in the pasture so at the moment I'm waiting for the mint to subside which a local farmer told me it will and drinking milk from a neighbor's cows. We give millie's milk to Sassafrass, the two week old jersey heifer from a local organic farm breeding for production on grass. We have had a great time working with her. It is fun to start from scratch and we really want to end up with a good tame one with the right breeding (for production on almost all grass). Here are some pictures.
My husband feeding Sassy the first day (we don't normally hold the bottle like this, it was just for the picture)
out comes the bottle!
my son's first taste of a bottle (not to mention cow spit!) ;0)
