So I've posted about the "pregnant" gilt that didn't feel so good but is fine. Well she didn't feel so good right at around her due date. We had her 3 weeks at that point. The seller is someone we've been buying pigs from for many years. When we went to get some more piglets we looked at the pregnant gilts he had for sale. We bought one. After we load her he said to be careful she could miscarry easily at this stage. 3 weeks from due date. We had a 30 minute easy trip home. It went well and she moved into her spacious quarters in the shed addition of the barn. Full of clean straw. She moved in nicely .
We spent alot of time with her and noticed NO change in her body at all well except to put on some weight. We introduced her to whey and then milk when Maggie calved.
Her belly got bigger but not like with babies like everyone said and showed me pics. I figured since she's a first timer we might not see too big a belly But then I deal with cows mostly!
The day after her due date she acted off- and didn't eat or drink much. We worried and worried but she came around when the bordercollie who was also under the weather started to visit again. We assumed she had a 3 week later due date which the previous owner said could happen. Well 3 weeks later this pig is in full blown raging heat. I had thought she was acting "off" and hoped it was piglets. Her belly looked like it might be getting milk- I was DREAMING. She is eating too much! It's just teats and belly. She is cycling. all this is right on schedule for her due date.
I'm not happy. I paid $350 for her and needed those piglets.
All my research says she was never pregnant or miscarried a bit ago- before we got her. But if she miscarried she wouldn't still be cycling on her due date which would be her normal cycling schedule. Nothing I found in my book said she was "delicate" the end of her pregnancy. They all say the first 6 weeks she is "delicate" and could miscarry with any changes in environment. She would not be cycling on her due date.
If she was never pregnant... she was 9 months of age when we got her then she didn't show much heats, he missed it or whatever........
Dh is calling it newbie experience which I don't like to hear since we've had pigs for 10 years- feeder pigs no gilts or sows. Why the heck did this guy offer us pregnant gilts knowing they could miscarry easily when transported? Or so he says? And tell us after she's on the trailer? I like this guy and he's been good to us, mostly. He did miss that a piglet had no anus (yeah)......... He is extremely busy with work.
If she did miscarry wouldn't we have seen SOMETHING? Her vulva didn't do anything until her cycling last weekend. I'm in her pen every day and saw NOTHING. Of course she could have eaten it. (blah!)
So pig experts....... should I try to get something from this guy for selling us a non-pregnant pig? I do owe him money. We traded part of her fee towards some chicken (he has a bbq he wants it for).
Well I now have to pay $70 each for piglets and I need 8 of them.......... My profitable pig operation took a hit.
Oh I can like get a vet out to do a sonogram- should I? I know they do it at some other local farms but not sure the cost.
I so hate thinking like a newbie!
