We have a young gilt due with her first litter. Breeder said it could be as early as June 9th. We've passed that!
She doesn't look like she has milk yet but then I'm used to seeing older sows or cows sooo hard to compare.
Anyways last week we noticed a change in her. She is slower to get up to visit, tired a lot, not eating as energetically. Just a bit nothing dramatic.
Now it's dramatic. She doesn't want to eat her grain even with water on it (which she likes usually) No the grain has not changed and we grind it here.
We don't have milk yet as Maggie is due anytime (come on we need milk).
I gave the gilt some yogurt last night and she ate it up nicely. She got the rest of the quart this morning and again ate it nicely. She isn't drinking much water or playing around with the pan either.
I am picking up some whey from a cheesemaker today which she usually likes alot.
She spends her time lounging in her massive pile of straw.
Overall she is slowed down a lot.
Is this normal when they are close to due date? Am I worrying for nothing?
A friend was over Sunday and said she didn't think she looked due yet. She isn't HUGE and no milk yet. But then she hadn't see a pregnant gilt in years and usually it was sows with a few litters already.
We had vistors today and Charlotte didn't even care about them she usually up and ready for some scratching and brushing from visitors.
What else should I look for in a pig? Get out the old thermometer?
Her poo was normal.
I'm not liking her off feed and off water....... but she is big time preggers so......
I"ve had 2 sick dogs because the found a pile of beef tallow left over from rendering in the compost pile so I'm a tad frazzled. Dogs are fine now and I'm washing dog blankets today while worrying over the pig- charlotte. AND waiting for my cow Maggie to calve.
Thanks
