Our long anticipated cow search is over! Below is a picture of our new Jersey, Chloe (formerly Leanna).
For those of you following my post "Found New Cow - Need Advice", this is the first cow everyone was telling me to get. She is a 5 year old Jersey, is completely healthy, grass-fed and organically raised only, and VERY pregnant. When I called the guy he said he hadn't had her palpated yet so he wasn't sure if she was pregnant yet. One look at her answered that question. She is definitely pregnant. She is one of his nurse cows, so he doesn't check on her as much as he does his line cows.
She is bred to an Angus bull, and he said he could have her palpated, but his vet specializes in horses and he doesn't put much stock on her due date predictions. He thinks she'll calve in late May or early June, and said he's going to pull the calves off her this week and start drying her off.
I plan on going to pick her up next Saturday, so I pray all goes well with that. She will be dried off until she calves, so we'll be watching for signs of that since we don't know the exact date. We'll be excitedly anticipating the arrival of our new calf, and starting her on a milk fever diet as soon as she starts to show signs.
The cow you guys kept warning me off about, Jill, was VERY hard to pass up. She was a stunningly beautiful Jersey, and we really wanted her, but that mastitic quarter had us worried, so we took your advice and bought the younger more healthy cow. I feel like we're getting more for our money, and Chloe is plenty beautiful herself (except in the picture she is getting ready to prove to us that her digestive system works.)
Thanks for all your advice. I'll write back with any questions. I'm sure there will be many.
