Hey just thought i'd share a past experience as a warning to anyone with animals full stop! It was around 5-6 years ago mum had given one of our miniature ponies to her sister and we borrowed a single float off a welder friend of ours who used the float flat out for both horses and her pony. She ASSURED us it was 100% SAFE. It was about an hours drive to get there anyway long story short about 10 mins before they arrived at the destination (i wasnt there thank god) SOMEHOW she managed to turn herself around and put her foot on the front part of the floor which was apparently a separate piece NOT ATTACHED it flipped and so did she. The poor bugger ended up upside down with her bum out the floor on the road being dragged at 70km /hr for about 60-80 metres as soon as they realised something was wrong they stopped and thank god they did because i'm sure it could have been worse. They got her out and tried to get a vet... which all but one were at the other end of the state at a vet conference thank god scott came out even though he advised us to put her down. Her WHOLE rump was ground to the bone you could see her backbone sticking out right down to her tail (I have photos but none on my computer will try to put some on at some stage time is a bit hard to find around here) and she'd cut both her teats off they were just hanging like a big flap. WELL by the time the vet got out an hour later she was standing on the side of the road EATING of all things. He said straight away shes lucky to be a pony as a horse would probably be dead of shock by now and said she still probably would and we should put her down. Well mum being mum couldn't do it so they walked her the rest of the way about 2 hrs until we could organise another float the next day to take her back home in(which she walked straight into huh?? i wouldnt have gone near a float ever again if it was me!). Scott didn't expect it to heal much if at all and said she'd never nurse a foal. Well good old Amber proved us all wrong and after months of grossness (what skin was left died and peeled off like leather) rearing and kicking and perseverance the huge hole finally started to fill in. In the end even all her hair grew back and she had a tiny white strip of hair in the middle of it but other than that she turned out fine (wish i had the before and after photos to show u right now) Shocked the vet completely but what shocked him even more was he done such a good job stitching her 'udder' back on she had a foal and raised her no problems!!! Miracle I know!!! Well the main point of my story is there was a lady up the road who just had her old horse put down and wanted something to help keep the grass down so at first we agisted them there then mum offered Amber and her foal to her on the proviso if anything happened they came back to us. Well one day we got a weird phone call asking when we were going to take our ponies back? They were acting as though they never had the conversation on keeping them wtf?? well when we got her back we knew why...
she was a nurse and she didnt even notice it drying out... and now look we're back to square one it started as dry skin over summer but she left it to split and get infected it had a really rotton smell to it and she got flyblown we've been treating it again since about February with everything emu oil, manuka honey, yellow lotion Nothing was working then i noticed in our ag store a product called 'Debrisol" its supposed to get rid of pus and dead flesh and it seems to be working it keeps it clean and its like it turns the proud flesh into haematomas they bleed for a few days then fall off not sure if u can tell from the pics but the right side was the worst now its nice new pink skin had a huge lump on it but it fell off. Hopefully it will heal before summer hits and i hope she gets her fur back as the effort mum went to in the first place was tremendous and we put her through hell everyday cleaning it up. This probably seems pointless But i am sooooo angry at this woman all she needed was a bit of moisturiser and a cotton rug.....and this would be a perfect little chestnut pony NOT in pain...we honestly thought she would be well looked after or we would NEVER had let her go at all
Anyway has anyone else heard or used this 'Debrisol'? I only found it 3wks ago when we went to get vytrate for my scouring calf! I swear by it now it has done in 3 weeks what we tried for over 6 months to do!! We've used a bottle already but its only $30 and we have gone from having to wash her 3 times a day and having to duck 2 feet constantly to only spraying her 2-3 times daily and it doesn't bother her whereas everything else stings her. If anyone has any bad wounds infected and yuk i reckon give this stuff a try i'll post some more in a couple weeks and see how it goes and i'll see if i can find some old photos...no promises there though unfortunately
