So it's been a rough couple of days here on our farm...my daughters 2yr old filly "Precious" cut her leg somehow (we're still searching and trying to figure out on what) and at first it looked only superficial and really not that bad. So I cleaned it with peroxide and put some antibacterial ointment on it. Then yesterday morning I noticed her knee joint and lower leg was super swollen, so with it being her leg I immediately called the vet.
Vet comes out immediately and at first thought the same thing I did, that it wasn't that bad but once she really started probing it and cleaning it out etc...we both discovered it was much worse than what we thought. Seems she actually nicked the tendon sheath and was leaking sheath and joint fluid. Not good news...so she flushed it best she could...gave tenuous shot...heavy duty antibiotics...pain killers...wrapped leg and said she'd be back in the afternoon to check on her.
Fast forward to yesterday afternoon...vet comes back out and taps her knee joint to check fluid color...came back clear so no infection there (good news) and after the wrap was taken off the swelling was almost gone (more good news). Vet shoots antibiotics straight into the wound along with something else (missed that med name) and she re-wrapped leg. Left me with bute to give twice a day (am & pm) and she's now in the small paddock away from her pasture buds. Vet will be back out on Monday to give 2nd dose of heavy antibiotics and to check leg again.
Needless to say I'm now about $600 poorer with another vet bill coming Monday that I'm not sure how I'll be able to pay. Man, I'll be so glad when this filly grows up some and gets outta the childish stage of "let me investigate everything under the sun especially if it looks dangerous".
Right now according to the vet it's just a waiting game, hoping the leg heals properly and she will be sound. If not though I guess we'll have a pasture ornament out there looking pretty.
