*C.A.L.P.C Syndrome-Cows Are Like Potato Chips, ya can't have just one! ;D
Oh yes, I have it BAAD! LOL!!
I just brought home a reg'd Brown Swiss cow tonight! I'm pretty tired from the drive to a place half an hour from my Dad's (2.5 hr drive, each way, plus time allowance for me getting lost! LOL!) and then back again in the same day, along with Tabitha and Jesse and the lil one in my tummy!! But very happy!! ;D
I have a friend who wanted to invest in a cow. Not outright own one, just share in one. She is in love with Gabi, and so it had to be a Brown Swiss. So we managed to track one down.
She is a 6 yr old cow that just came off the line-today!! I am very impressed with her build, but I don't think she is quite as pretty as Gabi. Still, a really sweet cow. I guess the main reason is, when they were describing her to me, they said she is a "white brown swiss". Immediately, my imagination shot to those gorgeous light coloured cows with the mouse points. However, Pleasant View Danny Loekie is actually white. She has a lighter muzzle, and a black nose, and black "eyeliner" and a black switch-but the rest of her is white!!
But she is good and quiet, with a nice bag for handmilking and for a decent price. And for the amt of time she spent on the line, she is in very nice physical shape-good sound feet and legs, and a nice temperament-so far-haven't gotten a chance to milk her yet!! I was assured that she was quiet and good. She was sure good to load!! The husband partner of the dairying team had gone back to Holland for his brother's wedding, so it was the wife, her two young boys and I to load the cow. I misunderstood where I was to back the trailer (and I'm terrible at backing trailers anyways!!). Well, before I knew what was going on, the dairywoman had run Loekie into the parlor, tagged her, and had her back in the alleyway-but I was backed up to the pen gate!! I shouted, but there wasn't much she could do behind the cow!!
Quickly hopping in the truck, I tried to fix the situation, but of course, panicked, I couldn't maneuver the trailer at all!! Luckily the cow stopped at the edge of the cement, peered over, then went to visit with her (ex!) colleagues on the other side of the fence, and her owner came over to help back the truck up. Then we repositioned the cow and loaded her. Thank heavens she cooperated-the other side of the cement pad was open field!! So I didn't get the opportunity to check her bag, but was assured that her SCC count was fine (her milk was being used on the line even today!) She is apparently giving about 7.5 gallons/day, although I expect this to drop on a less hot feed ration. She was just recently bred back (getting all the details on that tommorrow in an email). Hooves crossed she caught, and that it was to the handsome brown swiss bull I saw on their place!!
Will try and post pix soon! For now, I'm going to rest up for tommorrow's milking!
