Life takes a lot of interesting twists & turns. I sold Hattie (jersey/holstein x) to Liz back in the spring...THINKING... I would not need that much milk & Liz did...well.. ;D.. goes to show me..don't think LOL. For years there has been talk of a cheese making co-op buying out an established raw goat cheese company and going with local milk (they have been bringing in the goat milk from back east) It seems to have become a reality. I thought about putting in a dairy, but knew I couldn't handle it alone (hubby is a trucker and gone all the time) WELL, as the fates would have it, my daughter called and asked if she could please move back HOME and help me run a dairy LOL> SOOO, long story short, the only way to really raise your kids (and still put the goat milk into the tank) is by feeding them cow's milk. I had Sally Goodin' and Abby left (after selling Hattie to Liz & Emma to Christy)Like I needed another cow LOL. What I need is a AI tech, that can make it here when the girls are actually in heat. not days later. I have no more bull access. We bred Sally or tried to to a mini bull last year. NOT the perfect date. I THOUGHT I was a die hard JERSEY GAL..... however..... I'd like to introduce Isobel, who is just a smidge jersey, a bit of holstein and a WHOLE lot of milking shorthorn LOL.
there is a dairy not far from me who milk what I always called FRANKEN-COWs (the triple blend, heavy on the shorthorn) He (the hubby who does the AI'ing calls them designer cows LOL) They hardly EVER let go of a heifer, but little Isobel, didn't want to drink out of a nasty old bucket, her wanted someone to hold a bottle, stroke her little head and call her baby hehehehe.. SO, that's exactly how we do it at feedings LOL. She is almost 3 weeks old. Lives in the side yard with Harold the pig and some of the baby goats. She's so DIFFERENT then the jerseys were as babies, but I think she's very pretty. She is a deep, deep red roan.
susie, sally, abby, elroy & baby issy
