Hello. I've written a couple times before trying to figure out if my Jersey, Daffney, was pregnant or overdue. Turns out we dried her off for nothing and have an appointment with the vet to check her out next Saturday since we haven't been able to detect any heat periods for almost a year.
Yesterday we went back to the Jersey dairy and came home with another cow, supposedly tested positive for pregnancy and due in November. While we were looking at her, she started jumping on the cow next to her. The dairy lady said the other cow was ready to be bred and this was normal.
Then we took her home and Daffney was sniffing back there and started jumping on the new cow! Nobody "stood" for anybody so I'm confused about what this means. Things are calmer today, with lots of rubbing and licking going on (wonder if they remember each other from before?)
Should I be worried? We've actually gone through two cows before, waiting on a calf which never came, so I guess I'm paranoid. This cow is not quite 6 months pregnant and I don't really trust my bumping skills after that last fiasco (was I feeling the rumen?), plus the dairy lady said don't bother trying to compare size to determine pregnancy as there is just too much variance. (Daffney is still much fatter!)
We did get a lot of nice, fresh milk last night, although it took two of us to convince her to put her head in that stanchion! I think I'll just milk once a day, planning to dry her off in October if all goes well.
Does this "jumping" business sound like trouble?
Thank you!
