Yup, all of you who said, cows are like potato chips......
Well anyway this one is free. She actually belonged to my dad, then my sister inherited her and now she's phasing out her nurse cows. She says she's got her first grandbaby on the way and she's ready to play.
So, Lady is approx. 10 years old. She is purebred Holstein. My dad bought her from the dairy because she was twin to a bull calf. She's produced a calf every year. ;D
She's the cow that will let anything suck. one year my sister had 6 one week old feedlot calves she was raising on goats. She turned lady in with them and they all "attacked" her. it was cute, because when they got their bellies full, they continued just nosing her bag, like, okay, mom's still here. Checking and rechecking every few seconds to make sure the food was still there. I told my sister they should have named her Job, because she had the patience of Job. she would just very carefully walk and step over them to get where she wanted. (BTW, She didn't leave all 6 of them on her)
Anyway, I debated about getting another calf to start on her. However, I figured my two calves will probably "rob" from her anyway and didn't want a little one to be competing with that. So I think I'll just let them rob and then maybe shut their momma up more and milk more. I was wanting to try my hand at cheese making etc, when the weather cools a little bit. So that might work out okay. thoughts?
She's planning on bringing her next month when the weather breaks.
What do you think about if I AI'd her to a good Holstein bull, could I get anything out of a heifer? Where to market a heifer calf? Or should I just cross her with Angus or jersey?
Also, my sister has her other Holstein nurse cow that she's selling. I've posted her in the Auction Barn.
I'm excited. this is contagious.
