I was out looking for a missing hen last night (who turned out not to be missing at all, just hiding in a corner in the coop ), and as I was tromping through the long wet grass in my tennis shoes, how lovely, I passed the very large patch of what I had previously thought was narrow-leaved plantain. I never really looked at it closely before, be we have other smaller patches of plantain, and I just thought that's what it was. However, last night I saw that it was flowering, and it was NOT plantain!
I have no idea where this came from. I've been through all my native northern plains weed and plant books, and it's not in ANY of them. The only thing I can think of is it's a present from a migrating bird. This patch was there last summer, but it was small, and it didn't flower, so I never paid it much attention.
Now I'm in a panic. I know exactly how hard it is to get rid of comfrey, and the fact that it's flowered already gives me the heebie-jeebies. If I go out and CAREFULLY cut the flowering tops off of this, and keep on it (like I need another chore!) through the summer, is there any possibility I can hope to keep it under control?
I have nothing against comfrey, I LOVE the stuff, but I like my sterile Russian comfrey that doesn't spread and is very well behaved in its assigned spot. We have enough problems with weeds in our pastures without having comfrey displace ALL the rest of the grass.
This stuff is a lot different than my Russian comfrey. The leaves are much smaller, and smoother, but the flowers are a dead giveaway. I suppose I'll dry the tops and at least I'll have a good supply of dried leaf, if nothing else! LOL!
