I am kind of reeling from recent news. Our part of the country has been recently blessed (? is it really?) Seems we sit on one of the worlds largest deposits of oil and natural gas.
I live in tiny little town that sits on a fairly busy highway, but the last census put us around 400 +-. There are a lot of old folks that live here, small grocery store, every few years someone tries to open the gas station but can not seem to keep it going for more than a few months. A couple of places serve breakfast and lunch, but no big time restaurants. No real businesses to speak of.
Well the "city worker", (hey we have two!) has told my dh that his son works for one of the BIG oil companies that is drilling here and the company says that they (GULP) will be hiring 40,000 people and putting them to work in our 50 mile radius. Before the end of the year. They are planning one or two large HOTELS in our little town, and another small town about 8 miles away. They are also going to put in a strip mall in that town, now there are a few gift/flower shoppes and drug store, more eating places there than here. But this is just CRAZY and I am frightened. Turns out we are the hub of this great big disaster that is looming. Centrally located and all and apparently just the right place for these hotels. Seems that even Liz's Stockdale (another tiny town just a little further down the road) is getting a hotel and such as we speak. Every spare lot is being turned into an RV park and they are being filled to the brim. Most of the hotels are also being "reserved" before they are even built by these huge oil companies for their employees for over a year!
The best part of all this news --The 10 acres adjacent to our farm is one of the major contenders for being bought for building the hotel. I scoffed at all of this and chalked it up to this guy likes to get dh stirred up, but there are folks that live south of here and have experienced all this already and go to these oil meetings and are hearing from people really in the know that this will all take place.
So while it seems fortune has found us, I dare ask, "What the heck are all these people going to do when TSHTF?" What the heck are we supposed to do now?? I did not move here 16 years ago to live like that. PROGRESS!! Who needs it!?!!
