Hi Joann, Just finished catching up on Heifer Diaires and realized that Jasmine is once again open. DH wonders (very quietly as we don't want to intrude!) if you would consider synchronizing her? WIth the expense and such so far, it might work for you to synchronize her and then be able to tell your AI technician in advance exactly when you need him and have him realize you are synchronizing her and he HAS to be there. THen you don't have to worry about catching her at the right time, having an AI tech who might not know the right time to breed and so on. Your vet could show you how to do a CIDR (or at least my DH would show somebody LOL), and then you could do it yourself in the future if you want to have her or Helen bred and you can't seem to catch them at the right time. He estimated the cost should be $12 for the CIDR (high end) and $5 or $10 tops for lutalyse injections. Plus whatever the vet charges to come out to do it or whatever.
Or maybe something that would work for you if you don't like to synchronize would be KAMAR - one of those heat detection strips that sticks to the cow's tailhead and releases red die when another cow mounts her. THen you could tell when she was in standing heat and call the AI guy to come out and breed her about 12 hours later. (the old AM PM rule - if she comes into heat in the afternoon, he could come out next afternoon to breed her). It only costs about $1.50 for a KAMAR.
This is also probably old news to you and the last thing you needed to read, so forgive me if I've stepped on any toes. I know how annoying dairy cows can be for silent heats !!
