OH Well, I had my Bessie checked by a lovely lady vet yesterday, just to make sure she was going to be OK for breeding at the end of this month.
I'm not sure if some of you remember I have waited on a calf from her since last Xmas but nothing, the vet thought she would have slipped it, I was sure I would have seen something to suggest this, considering her second palpation estimated her at 180 days in mid march. Anyway I started to doubt myself and put it down to she slipped it as she started to cycle.
So we had a vet here yesterday and got her to check, she palpated, said not in calf and no reason she shouldn't have one, so I thought I'd get her to have a look at one quarter, which has had a tiny amount of milk in it, that stumped her!
So in she went again and way, way down she reckons she can feel a calf & legs!
OMG, she said, like my last vet that she would have guessed it would be a 6 1/2 - 8 month old calf........and it has fluid around it, like a normal pregnancy.
She asked if there was any chance Bessie has seen a Bull since we got her at Xmas, definitely not. Bessie has also been cycling regularly every 19 days for a few months now.
So we gave her an injection to abort, she should abort whatever it is between day 3 and 5.
I am terrified!
She said usually with a mummified calf the uterus would close up around it, but it was open, i think, does this make sense? And if it has been in there for some time she could start to cycle again.
Maybe I'm in for a rotten calf............but she's been cycling....
I hardly got any sleep last nite, if/when she aborts I wonder if it can get into position properly for her to calve. I wonder if it will bring on milk, I dunno.
My poor baby!
Has anybody any advise or anyone had a mummified fetus or rotten calf?? Please
