Julie has free access into her stall in the barn. She can either stay inside or if she wants, go outside. If the rain stops she usually goes out for a little bit but then comes back in when it rains again. The horse has the same access to her stall, although she's not smart enough to go inside unless she's looking for food. Anyway, this morning I went out to feed and do my normal routine of cleaning up, filling water tubs, etc., while Julie, the goats and the horse eat. But, last night Julie somehow got locked in her stall, where she's fed, and couldn't get out so of course I had more work to do there. I can't figure out how her gate got closed since I have a chain holding it open. Anyway, while I was at it I decided to pull in the wheelbarrow and do some extensive muck work in all the stalls. Julie was at her feed enjoying herself and I was working around her. All of a sudden I guess she realized that her gate was open and she took off out the gate, through the barn doors and outside kicking and dancing around like she got hit with a hot shot or something. The chickens were scratching around and they went off in one direction, the goats jumped, the horse jumped, and I dang near landed in the wheelbarrow trying to get out of her way. A couple minutes later she came racing back in, stopped at her gate and looked like she was going to come back in and resume eating her breakfast when all of a sudden she spun around again, this time hitting the wheelbarrow parked just outside her gate, which was full of muck, and knocked it over. I wasn't so upset about that as I was when she spun around a 3rd time and ran right through the middle of the mess scattering it like a spoiled child who didn't like his building blocks! She was having a ball and so proud of herself. I know she was laughing at her fun.
After I picked up the wheelbarrow and cleaned up her mess (with the word "hamburger" going through my mind) she just mozied back in, looked at me as if to say "what's the big deal?"and started eating again totally oblivious to everything.
I'm going to be so glad when I find another cow that I hope will teach her some manners! ;D
