I thought I would post an update since I have lots of animals in halters now. I bought a lot of them from Jeffers in the spring to make sure I had correct sizes and here is what has happened.
My 1/4 Jersey 1/4 galloway 1/2 dexter calf at birth had to have the medium goat size. He grew out of it and out of the large goat and is now in a calf size halter. Then I lost the calf size halter, so DH made me a hole way high up on a yearling halter and he is wearing that. He will be 3 months old August 11th.
My little Dexter heifer fit into the small goat halter at birth. She was wearing the medium sized halter until about a week ago and now needs a large goat size. She just turned 2 months on the 29th of July.
I have a 9 month old Dexter bull who is too large for the yearling cow halter but way too small for cow size. I had a yearling horse halter with adjustable nose and such and DH put in a couple extra holes in the strap that goes behind their ears and it fits him better than any of the cow halters fit the cows . It doesn't slip off, it doesn't tighten or fall off his nose like a figure eight cow halter and he wears it all the time (he was tethered up until yesterday).
The dexter cows are wearing yearling cow halters and the Jeffers halters fit them very well (our local farm store had the same style I thought, but no, the figure eight part slips off their nose because the side straps are attached in the wrong place for their wee muzzles).
My larger headed Jersey x galloway fits into a yearling halter if I squeeze her head *G*, but I have adult cow size that fits her well.
Anyway, for those that were asking about halter sizes for dexters or Jersey calves, that is what I am finding works for us.
