In the garage! I went to bed and I could hear Cowboy doing his usual... Rarf!..... Rarf!..... just his normal "I'm on duty now, and you critters better not try to come in here" barks. But at about 3:15, I woke up to him barking incessantly in the garage, which was odd. I laid there and tried to ignore it, but then I realized it wasn't his normal bark, it was more high pitched and urgent-sounding, and much more rapid than normal. He was alarm-barking.
I got up and went to the window and said, "Cowboy?" and he came out of the garage and wagged his tail at me and sat down. I couldn't think why he'd be INSIDE the garage barking, so I went back to bed. A minute later, he started up again with the alarm barking, so I decided someone needed to go check on him and see what was disturbing him. By now I was fully awake and figured maybe he'd cornered a skunk in there, and no way did I want to be in an enclosed building with a skunk, so I got Rich up. That's his job, you know, to lift heavy objects and kill things.
I felt bad asking him to go out there in the middle of the night, but Cowboy was definitely calling for help, so he put his bathrobe and slippers on, grabbed The Judge and went out to see what was going on. He flipped on the light and saw our neat stack of coolers was just a jumble, and there was a bunch of other stuff out of place and scattered about. As soon as Rich was in the garage, Cowboy came out and sat by the back door, where I was standing, waiting. Then we heard, BANG! Oh, man, that Judge is loud, but in an enclosed building? It's a good thing Rich is already mostly deaf! As soon as he shot, Kiara took off like a streak of lightning for the far end of the pasture, and Cowboy plastered himself up against the door. If I'd wanted to get out, I couldn't have. Then, again, BANG!
For some reason, which neither of us can figure out, Cowboy at that point decided he needed to go IN the garage with Rich. Maybe it was because I was on the wrong side of the door, and he wanted someone to reassure him, but he's never EVER gone toward the sound of a gunshot. So I hollered to Rich that Cowboy was coming in, so he'd know, but it was all over by then.
Rich came out holding a juvenile raccoon by the tail and dropped him out by the corner of the building. He said the raccoon was pressed back in the corner of the garage, behind some sacks of wood chips, where Cowboy couldn't get to him. Maybe he was trying to, and that's what happened to the coolers and the other assorted items, but when he couldn't get the coon, he started yelling for help. Bless his heart! And he was SO BRAVE to go back in the garage where all the shootin' was goin' on! LOL! He's gotten so much better at being a real LGD in the last couple of years or so.
Kiara, on the other hand, laid low until well after sunup. I didn't even SEE her until I was headed out to milk, and then all I saw was the top of her head - she was peering out over the tops of some long grass in the pasture. Poor thing. I had to even take her food out to the corral because she was afraid to come anywhere near the garage. She's recovered now, but she does hate it when Rich has to shoot something.
