Greetings!
Well, I hope this isn't a paranoid post...
Our cow is 157 days pregnant--she's due on Thanksgiving Day. Anyway, when I went out to the pasture this morning to bring her in for milking, I noticed quite a bit of wetness on the back of one of her thighs (she was laying down).
When she got up, I noticed a couple of drips from her vulva, which seemed thin, like urine. So I'm not sure if this was just urine or a normal discharge or something bad, but I was a little surprised to see her thigh wet, because I don't think it's normal for a cow to urinate while laying down, but I really don't know. Also, there wasn't a big wet spot on the ground, like I would expect if she had urinated in the spot where she was laying.
Also, about two days ago, I noticed quite a bit of thick discharge (clear, no odor) a couple minutes after she had urinated. It was stuck to her tail, so we got a good look at it. It was gel-like in a string on her tail. The discharge is very much like what she produces in heat, although she is not behaving like she does when in heat--she's very vocal and very "humpy".
Of course, my fear is that there may be a problem with the calf. Is this a reasonable concern, given the discharge? Or is the discharge fairly typical? Other than the discharge, she seems healthy, and is behaving as she usually does.
Our pasture is not large, and I cover most of it on foot daily, so I think I would have noticed an aborted calf, unless she would eat it... again I don't know if this is typical bovine behavior or not.
Thank you for your help!
Sincerely,
sb
