I have raised pigs for 3 years and have never had a problem killing them with one shot, until this past Friday. It bothers me and that is why I would like to ask for some advice.
I have always used a .38 caliber pistol to shoot the pigs. A little grain, sometimes Vodka as well, and then I make that shot just to the left of the X between eyes and ears. Every animal has simply dropped.
This past Friday same as usual, this pig was 265 lbs, I shot the pig and a glob of blood came out of his mouth but he just gave a grunt and walked away briskly (not running just walking faster than normal). The pig was not squeeling or going crazy, he actually walked up to the electric fence and simply turned around.
I was shocked because the pig is not frantic not going crazy just a little dazed and still walking.
So I walked up to him and again shot him and he just continued to walk away, he probably walked 500 feet back from the pasture into his pig house. I waited for him to come out and as he paused in the doorway I shot him once again! Again he just went walking back into the pasture. So I called my friend a couple houses away and he came down within 5 minutes with his .45 caliber pistol and he also walked up to the pig who was standing still and shot him in the head exactly in the right location. Well the pig went walking again. On the 5th shot we shot him behind the ear pointed towards the brain with the .45 and he finally went down in classic fashion and we bled him out.
He turned out to be a very nice pig as far as his muscling and fat content.
ANY advice as to why this would happen (what did we do wrong). I would rather not repeat this again and if I am doing something wrong I would like to know.
