After much experimenting and reading others' accounts of a formula that help aches and pains, sore muscles, sore hands from milking (!) and other stuff, I came up with this oil that seems to work really well for both Rich and me, so I thought I'd share in case anyone wants to make up a batch. It works better if you use it on a regular basis. I started using it when I was still hand milking and it did help with the pain in my hands, A LOT. I don't really need it now that I have the machine, but Rich still uses it every day, and I just made another batch today, so I had the recipe out. Here it is:
******************************
Heat over very low heat until wax is dissolved:
1/4 cup cayenne/ginger oil (*see below)
5 grams beeswax
When wax is melted, add and continue stirring:
2 T. DMSO
In a separate small bowl, combine together:
1 T. Emu oil
1 T. Arnica oil
1 T. Calendula oil
1 T. St. Johnswort oil
1 tsp. wintergreen essential oil
1 tsp. Orange TKO or "That Orange Stuff"
When the oil/DMSO mixture is clear and smooth, remove from heat and add:
1 T. Menthol crystals
Stir until the menthol crystals are dissolved, then pour into the bowl with the other oils, and stir until cooled. Pour into a dark glass bottle and use just a dab (it doesn't take much) on any sore parts. Makes about 1 cup.
NOTE: The DMSO carries all of that good stuff down through your skin, but it will also carry anything else that might be on you, so please be sure to wash your hands or other body parts before using this.
Most of the above ingredients can be had from Mountain Rose Herbs. The DMSO is usually found at vet supply or farm stores, I believe. Oh, and since DMSO is for animal use only, be sure to ONLY use this stuff on your animals. (You can, and it won't hurt them, but not on cats, OK?)
*Cayenne/Ginger infused oil
1/2 oz. minced or grated fresh ginger
1/2 oz. dried cayenne peppers, tops removed, crushed
(If you use fresh cayenne, increase to 1 oz.)
4 oz. olive oil
Heat over very low heat (the lowest setting on a crock pot, for instance) for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Strain into a dark glass bottle for storage.
