I had the vet out today because Bonnie still had a retained placenta and she has been testing positive on the ketosis strips even though she has been eating pretty well so I asked him to giver her a bottle of dextrose too.
First he gave her a shot of lutalyse which I expected and had asked for. Then he flushed her uterus with DISINFECTENT. It was blue and smelled like Nolvasan so I suppose that's what it was. I was holding Bonnie so I didn't really notice what he was doing until it was too late. He said "I like to use disinfectent so you don't have to worry about the milk." Really, I would NOT have minded dumping the milk but from what I've read, I thought he would use warm water.
Then he tried to give her an IV but she was jumping too much even in the stantion and with her head tied to the side. So after several attempts he did an IP instead. (Inter perineal I think he said?) He basically stuck a huge needle in her side and let the dextrose drip in. I couldn't see exactly how many times he stuck her trying to get the IV in, but I know it was several. She was so upset.
It's been almost 12 hours since she got the lutalyse and she still seems to be cramping and in a lot of pain. Is this normal for lutalyse or could it be from the disinfectant?
When I brought her in to milk this evening, she walked in the stantion eagerly and then immediately backed out. I'm sure she was having flashbacks to this morning! (I only have one stantion so had to use where I milk for the vet work. ) I finally got her in, but she didn't eat a single bite! She's getting almost 6 pounds and she has eaten almost all of it the last two milkings. I was excited because the dextrose brought her ketones down to just trace amounts, but now she's not eating her grain and I'm worried they'll go right back up again.
She also gave less than a gallon of milk and she has been giving about 2 1/2 - 3 gallons each milking. She just seemed so upset about being in the stantion and she kept humping up her back like she was going to pee but didn't. She has been doing that all day-it seems like she must be having uterine contractions when she's doing that.
So...should I be worrying? Is there anything I can do to help her? Should I forget this vet as someone I would ever use again?
