So! Today I bravely ventured out with my son's very complicated digital camera and attempted farmyard photography. Half the pictures I thought I took did not actually show up in the camera. I'm not sure why. So these aren't the best snaps. However, at least (and at last) I can show you all my "herd."
Here is Katika.
Katika is a Canadienne/Jersey heifer who was rescued as a day-old calf by Sally back in 2002. She turned 3 in May. Katika was pasture bred in October so is due in late July or early August. I taped her at 1125 lbs today.
Here is Ferdinand, my Jersey bull calf. Ferdinand turned six months old in early June. He taped at 330 lbs.
And here are the two of them.
I brought them over to the school barnyard to graze it down between school and camp -- no sense mowing! They have an interesting relationship. Katika is very bossy and will head-butt him out of her way 3/4 of the time. However, she occasionally licks his face -- and they both bellow for each other if they are separated. I have found that the solution to all leading problems with them is to lead one in each hand. This works perfectly unless Katika gets annoyed with him and tries to butt him (while I'm walking in between). At such times I am quick on my feet and give an outraged bellow of my own.
In this photo Ferdinand is trying to stalk the barn cat (just out of camera range) and Katika is watching with interest.
I wish one of the photos showing them side by side, and illustrating the size difference more clearly, had come out. Katika is about 54" at the hip so she's a tall girl. I'm thinking getting her bred next fall is going to be a matter of leading her into all available ditches! ;D
